State Senator Arrested on Assault Charges

State Senator James Marzilli, Jr. was arrested in Lowell on Tuesday on a number of criminal charges for allegedly touching a women sitting on a park bench inappropriately. According to the Lowell police the Senator approached a woman who was sitting on a park bench and made an inappropriate comment to her. He then attempted to inappropriately touch her in a sexual manner. When approached by the Lowell police the Senator gave the police officers a false name and tried to run. According to the police, Senator Marzilli was arrested at 3:45 p.m. on Market Street in Lowell. Mr. Marzilli was charged with attempting to commit indecent assault and battery, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice, and disorderly conduct. Senator Marzilli was released by a Clerk Magistrate on $1500 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday in Lowell District Court.
This has not been the first allegation involving Senator Marzilli. An incident occurred on April 6 where a woman told police that Senator Marzilli had touched her inappropriately after a political fundraiser. If convicted Senator Marzilli may face up to two and a half years in the house of correction.
